The lower house overrides the Senate and passes a building-law amendment touching 55 acts

On Wednesday the Chamber of Deputies overrode the Senate's rejection and passed the amendment to the Building Act together with a package of related changes, 55 laws in all, including nature protection and heritage conservation. The Senate had voted the bill down; according to Pirate MP and architect Veronika Kovářová, 56 senators warned against it. Environmental groups have called on the president to veto it.

Editor's note. Both statements come from opponents of the amendment: the environmental group Arnika and the opposition Pirates. Neither says what exactly changes in the 55 laws.

PSN

Construction starts at Vršovice's Koh-i-noor factory: about 600 units, and the chimney stays

Building work has begun on the site of the former Koh-i-noor factory in Vršovice. On just under two hectares the developer PSN plans roughly 600 units in new buildings and restored historic ones, plus about 30 commercial spaces. The first phase offers 125 units in the renovated building on Vršovická and just under 220 in the new building next door, mostly studios and one-bedroom flats; about a quarter are to be larger family flats. The listed former machine-shop and finishing buildings will be restored, and PSN will extend the factory chimney back to its original height with a steel structure. The design is by Jakub Cigler Architekti, with a pedestrian route through the middle of the site to Moskevská street. Production ran here for 120 years, from 1902 under the Waldes name and later as Koh-i-noor; PSN bought the site in 2018.

Editor's note. PSN does not say when the first phase is due to be finished or what the flats will cost.

BILLA

BILLA brings its Austrian organic line to Czechia with a 20 per cent discount until December

The BILLA chain is launching its BILLA Bio private label, until now sold in Austria, on the Czech market. The first wave covers plant-based drinks, pasta, cold-pressed oils, cheeses and breakfast products; each carries the EU organic-production logo. Holders of the BILLA klub app get 20 per cent off the whole range from 2 September to 1 December.

Editor's note. This is a paid promotion by the chain. The claim that organic need not be expensive rests on a discount that applies only with the app and only until 1 December; the release gives no regular prices.

ČEZ

ČEZ has connected five solar plants worth 23 MWp this year and aims for 240 by year-end

Since the start of the year the ČEZ group has put five photovoltaic plants with a combined 23 MWp into operation: Nákladka, Vajmanka, Chladící věže, Vlečka and Osek u Rokycan. By the end of the year the installed capacity of its solar plants should approach 240 MWp; for 2027 and 2028 the company announces hundreds more megawatts, some combined with batteries. It builds mainly on brownfields and industrial sites where a grid connection and infrastructure already exist. It plans to put up to 40 billion crowns into zero-emission sources by 2030.

Source: ČEZ

Editor's note. ČEZ is writing about its own plants. It does not say what the five cost; the figure of 30,000 households' consumption refers to all plants built in recent years, not to these five.

Almost half of business post is collected after hours, most at four in the afternoon

Of the 66,574 items that passed through one Prague pickup network in 2025, 47 percent were collected outside the eight-to-four window. The busiest hour is 4 p.m., with 11.1 percent of all pickups.

Editor's note. The figures are operating data from a firm that sells virtual company addresses, and they serve its case for a box open around the clock. This is one network, not the market; what customers of other providers do does not follow from it.

Pražské služby

Crossings by schools are repainted at the turn of August and September, in live traffic

Road-marking crews repaint crossings and signs by schools and nurseries while also putting up temporary signage for closures, often a few metres from moving cars. The work runs from design through printing and vinyl to installation on site, and is done under contract and instructions from the city roads authority.

Editor's note. The text was issued by the firm whose own staff appear in it, and comes with its own video about the trade. How many people and how many crossings this involves is not stated.

Hlídač státu

The highest income of a city councillor last year was 5.3 million

Hlídač státu has published the incomes and multiple offices of councillors in the Czech statutory cities for 2025. Top of the list is MP and Hradec Králové councillor Jiří Mašek with 5.3 million gross including allowances; the first ten places all went to ANO politicians. The most offices at once were held by regional governor and České Budějovice councillor Martin Kuba and Jihlava councillor Jiří Kotlík — eight each.

Editor's note. The data come from a watchdog association that makes its name tracking public money and publishes before elections on purpose. The figures are from mandatory declarations, so they can be checked; what follows from them the reader has to decide.

Most tips fall between six and ten percent; seventeen percent resent the terminal's nudge

According to the survey, the commonest tip sits between 6 and 10 percent of the bill. Seventeen percent of diners object to the preset amount on the card terminal — they feel pushed into tipping.

Editor's note. The survey was published by a firm that builds loyalty schemes for merchants, one side of the terminal argument. How many people were asked, nowhere.

VMS Vision

School-technology suppliers weigh in on the phone ban

A statutory limit on phones in lessons does not mean classrooms without technology, the text argues: a personal device distracts, while equipment bought for the classroom is meant to help the teacher explain and involve the class.

Source: VMS Vision

Editor's note. The distinction between a „personal device“ and „classroom technology“ is drawn by a firm that sells schools the latter. There is no data in the text; it is an opinion.

epet energie

A third of Czechs have had an electric shock; 63 percent skip wiring inspections

Survey findings: nearly a third of people have experienced an electric shock, and one case in ten involved a child. Over a fifth of households with children use no socket covers, almost a third leave appliances within children's reach, and one in five does not know how to put out a burning appliance.

Editor's note. The survey was paid for by an energy company; Ipsos collected the data. How many people were asked, and how the question was put, is not in the release.
