17 ransomware threats in Czechia in August, patient data from one healthcare provider offered for 1,400 dollars

The firm ComSource counted 17 documented ransomware threats in Czechia in August across healthcare, manufacturing, IT services, public administration, education and retail. It rates as most serious a leak from an unnamed healthcare provider recorded on 27 August: patient contacts and medical records, payment and insurance details and staff profiles were offered by the DataBastard group for 1,400 dollars. The most active group was Titan, with four attacks on data and IT service firms, and there was also a claim of 105,000 records leaked from an online shop.

Editor's note. The release names neither the healthcare provider nor the other firms. It was issued by ComSource, which sells cyber protection.

Half of parents post photos that let a child be located

Foundation data: 47 % of parents show off photos of their children, 51 % share information that makes a child locatable and 27 % post unsuitable or naked pictures. The RODIcheck tool, built with experts and the Czech police, analyses an uploaded photo and flags what makes it risky.

Editor's note. The tool is free and was built with the Czech police. Where the 47, 51 and 27 percent come from is not stated. Nor is what happens to a photo a parent uploads.

A fraudulent QR code looks exactly like a real one. You only find out after scanning

A QR code does not show where it leads until you scan it — and that is what quishing rests on: a fake code redirects to an imitation of your bank, a payment gateway, a courier or a public office and tries to extract login details.

Editor's note. The advice on not losing money while paying comes from a bank. How many people here have actually been caught by quishing, it does not say.

The data breach at British airports is reported by a firm that sells protection against it

Manchester Airports Group, operator of Manchester, Stansted and East Midlands, is dealing with a cyber incident; according to the release the attackers obtained data on roughly 8.7 million customers.

Editor's note. It is not the victim talking about the breach but a company selling protection against such attacks. The airport operator itself has so far said nothing. One more thing: the release's headline counts „nearly 9 million“, its own text 8.7.

22 documented cyber threats in July, ransomware hit state administration too

The release reports 22 documented threats across sectors. They span state administration, healthcare, energy and culture. The most aggressive campaign is said to have been run by the Titan group against IT and consulting firms, and banking vishing was added to the mix.

Editor's note. The count of twenty-two is the security firm's own. What counts as a threat is nowhere stated, and the national cyber agency's figures go unmentioned.
